Hong Kong means different things to different people. For some it is the view from the Peak by day or Hong Kong Island’s skyline by night as the skyscrapers flush their neon rainbows, competing like tetchy cuttlefish to out-display each other. It can be about a lingering morning of tea and bite-sized dim sum, or a multidish Chinese banquet. Others – hikers, birders, climbers – say nothing beats the Hong Kong countryside for its beauty, facilities and accessibility. |
It is all these things, of course; a city of teeming streets and empty wilderness, dazzling modernity and traditional observances. Brash, buccaneering and Westernised, yet conservatively minded and Chinese to its core, Hong Kong surprises, delights and confounds with its cheerful contradictions and energetic inconsistency. |
Macau is a tiny Portuguese possession on the south-eastern coast of China at the mouth of the Canton river. Comprising a peninsula and two adjoining islands, its total land area is only about 16 square kilometres.
It has a population of around 4, 84,000, mostly Chinese. |
Macao was once a prosperous port, but its harbour got silted up towards the beginning of this century and ships that used to call here began to go to Hong Kong and other ports. Today, its economy is based on light industry, fishing and tourism. Tourists come in large numbers from Hong Kong, attracted by the gambling. |
Shenzhen Special Economic Zone lies just across the Hong Kong boundary with Mainland China. The morning tour includes a stop at Dafen oil painting village. In the afternoon, visitors have the option of touring one of three theme parks in Shenzhen: Splendid China, the China Folk Culture Villages and Window of the World; or shopping at Lo Wu city mall. |
